Tabloids lined up Wednesday to mock and condemn President Barack Obama’s selfie with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial as a photographers who captured the moment directly contradicted the papers’ conclusions.
“[P]hotos can lie,” AFP photographer Roberto Schmidt wrote.
“All around me in the stadium, South Africans were dancing, singing and laughing to honour their departed leader. It was more like a carnival atmosphere, not at all morbid. …The atmosphere was totally relaxed – I didn’t see anything shocking in my viewfinder, president of the U.S. or not.”
